About our Self-drive Husky Dog Sledding Tours

Drive your own team of huskies! (Full winter clothing is provided)

Please note: Dog sledding requires a certain level of fitness. You need to be able to balance, have a good grip on the handle bar and help the dogs running or scooting uphill.

The tour starts at the front of the entrance of Scandic Ishavshotel in Tromsø City Centre. From here our bus driver will take you on a scenic 30-minutes drive to our kennel on Kvaløya.
At the kennel we provide you with a polar insulated suit and boots. You may also borrow hats and mittens if needed.
Once you are dressed you are welcome to explore the kennel and meet our dogs.
Before heading out on the trails the staff demonstrate how to drive your own sled and what to expect from the trail that day.

In pairs, one driver and one passenger, you will be directed to a sled. The dogs know they are just about to run, so expect a lot of excited barking and howling. Staff will assist you to release your sled.
You will stop several times along the trail to swap between driver and passenger. This is also your opportunity to take photos of your dog team and your partner. Our guides are available if you have any questions whilst on the trip.
After 70-80 minutes of adventure, you will arrive back at the kennel. As your reward, hot drinks and cake await you in the Sami tent, where you will also learn more about the dogs and can ask any other questions you may have.
Once you have changed out of your suits and said goodbye to the dogs, your driver will take you back to the city.

Please note; you will be offered hot drinks and cake at the end of the tour. Let us know in advance if you have any dietary requirements. Remember, there is limited space to bring bags and camera equipment on the sled itself. However, you are welcome to leave personal belongings in the lockers at the kennel. Items brought with you are done so at your own risk.

Pregnant women and children younger than 7 years cannot join the our sledding tours due to safety reasons.

Do I need to be fit to do self-drive husky dog sledding?

You do need a certain level of fitness to go dog sledding, as you will need to help the dogs uphill and to be able to scoot or push the sled from time to time. It is also important to be able to have a good grip on the handlebar and to keep the balance. Dog sledding is a team sport and the dogs will work harder for you if you help them.

If you have a moderate level of fitness, you will do very good!

Do you only have self-drive husky dog sledding tours?

Yes. We do only have self-drive dog sledding tours with one driver and one passenger per sled. You will follow a guide that takes good care of you and help you if needed.

Do you have a waiting list for your dog sledding tours?

Unfortunately, no. We do get a lot of requests on our husky tours on a daily basis. Therefore, we cannot manage a waiting list. You are welcome to keep an eye on our website for any last minute cancellations.

Can we drive to the kennel ourselves?

If you have your own transport, you are welcome to drive yourselves to our kennel. Let us know beforehand, so we can let our bus driver know.

When are we back in Tromsø after the tour?

The trip is 4 hours in total included transport.

If you join the 09:00 AM departure you will be back at 13:00 PM
If you join the 11:00 AM departure you will be back at 15:00 PM
If you join the 13:00 PM departure you will be back at 17:00 PM
If you join the 15:00 PM departure you will be back at 19:00 PM

What clothes do we need to wear?

We provide you with warm boots and a suit. But it is always good to wear several layers in wool and fleece, warm socks, a buff, hat and good mittens to stay warm on the trails.

How far in advance do I need to book a husky tour?

We recommend you to book a dog sledding tour at our kennel in Tromsø as early as possible and at least 1-2 months before you arrive to Tromsø. Spots are selling out quickly.

 Verified Huskies are best! We visited as part of a cruise expedition, it was a short stay to see the huskies and interact with them. Compared to all there is on offer this is probably quite a small adventure but we loved every moment. Came back covered in mud and stinking of wet dog and loved every minute of it. From an accessibility point of view this is restrictive and very reasonably so. If you can stand and balance with a walking stick and similar aid you will be ok. You have to be able to handle dogs potentially jumping on you. This was a dream and so worth it but it's not for everyone and that is ok. The people were so lovely and I imagine they would try and support accessibility as much as possible but this is a husky farm and not an environment for everyone. For me it was worth it.

 Verified Beautiful sleigh ride and meeting with Husky dogs The welcome was warm. Warm clothing equipment provided. Husky dogs are full of energy and excited before leaving. Briefing on sled driving and off you go to enjoy a 60 minute walk in a beautiful breathtaking landscape, on the island of Kvaloya.Back at the camp, in a traditional tent, we enjoyed a good campfire, a chocolate cake with hot chocolate and listened to the stories of the sled dogs.Before we left, we had time to redo the dogs' kneeling and cuddling, with their smart looks, they are adorable and really playful and cuddly.It was a very nice experience and meeting, we loved it and highly recommend it.

 Verified Many Northern Lights seen..... Despite poor conditions in Tromso the Northern Lights near the Swedish border seen in all glory and many colors. So everything perfect and only recommended. Were also one of the first groups at this location and only 8 participants in total.It should also be emphasized that a thermal suit and shoes are provided here.Unfortunately, despite good conditions, the food around the campfire did not take place. The other groups did it. We ate on the bus. It's too bad.

 Verified Special Experiences! We had an amazing night with our enthusiastic guide Klara and driver Kjell. I watched the weather and was able to switch the date to the only clear night before the snow, a helpful policy. Be on time to meet just outside of the Scandic Ishavshotel. Another large group never showed up so it was just the 4 of us. Having such a small group was very fortunate since we could ask questions and learn a lot from both. The drive was beautiful and we were early to a promising stop. There is no guarantee to see the Northern Lights but we ended up seeing the aurora almost non-stop for several hours, a truly memorable experience. We stayed out long into the early morning hours and yet Klara was able to send us photos later in the day. Artic Adventures provides winter jumpsuits, boots, dinner and hot drinks that really help when standing around outside. I hope others can experience something similar.Thanks to Klara, Kjell and the rest of the staff. We also joined the self-drive husky dog sledding tour and the Reindeer sledding and Sami culture tour. Both were also magical. Dog sledding seems to fill up quickly. The huskies are very friendly and eager. Reindeer tour is with a different group and a lot more people. Everything ran smoothly. Fun to feed the reindeer and touching to hear from the Sami people. We did this in the last week of March, right at the end of the season.

 Verified These Dogs Are Excited! Extremely fun experience to do in Tromso! The dogs are all very friendly and excited and just want to run and pull you along.  Verified Husky sledding through a magical winter wonderland Excellent from start to finish. A comfortable minivan ride to get there, greeted by our friendly host who handed out our clothing gear then it was time to make friends with these gorgeous dogs.After much patting and cuddles, we jumped on our sleds, and the dogs were so excited to begin.My husband and I shared a sled pulled by 6 husky, and we swapped turns as driver and passenger over the hour ride.The sledding was magical as we passed over thick snow-covered wilderness, passing by the gorgeous lake and eventually back to base where we were served hot drinks and the most delicious carrot cake I have ever tasted.
