Should I book a Small Group Northern Lights Tour in Tromsø in advance?

We highly recommend booking a tour in advance. Our Small Group Northern Lights Tours are very popular. Of course, last-minute bookings may be possible in some days or periods during the season. But, if you would like to be sure to secure a spot on the tour, booking beforehand is a good idea as we experience a high demand.

Do I need to book a Northern Lights Tour in Tromsø to be able to see the lights?

You do not have to book a tour to be lucky to see the Northern Lights dancing on sky, as is it possible to see it from the city centre on good days. However, we recommend you to book a tour if you would like to increase your chances and experience the Northern Lights in nature with no light pollution.

Even If the lights do not appear on the sky in Tromsø, you might still have the chance to see it, as we then will take you to other areas and maybe even Finland.

What should I wear on a Small Group Northern Lights Tour?

Layers of warm clothes! The Arctic is cold in winter and even though we dress you with a warm suit, it is a good idea to wear layers of wool and fleece underneath to stay warm while waiting for Aurora Borealis to show up. The warmer you are, the better an experience it will be for you.

From when can I see the Northern Lights in Tromsø?

The Northern Lights appears from September, when the sky gets dark again. It will be dancing until early April and will typically show on the sky between 18:00 and 02:00.

Can I see the Northern Lights from the city of Tromsø?

The Northern Lights are certainly dancing above Tromso. However, the best views are to be found outside the city, as the Northern Lights are easier to spot without light pollution. We will of course take you to some of the most optimal viewing locations. On days with cloudy weather we might even take you to Finland to chase the lights!

Can I bring a bag on the bus?

Yes, you can. There is space on the bus for you to bring a small backpack. It is always good to bring extra warm clothes, some snacks and of course: your camera!

Small Group Northern Lights Tour – A magical experience in Tromsø

Imagine warming your hands around a campfire, listening to the crackle of the flames and the wind across glistening snow.  You look up into the starry night sky and see a streak of white. The streak changes to green, purple and red. You watch it begin to move, flicker and even dance in front of your very eyes.

These are the Northern Lights, and this is the magical experience that we hope to show you on your stay in Tromso.

Join us for a cozy night under the Northern Lights

The Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis, is the reason many of our guests come to Northern Norway and Tromsø. Our proximity to the magnetic North Pole and milder climate here in Tromsø makes it the perfect location to see this phenomenon. Join us in our minibus, as we search the night sky to find the Aurora.

Your Small Group Northern Lights Tour adventure begins at Scandic Ishavshotel in Tromso City Centre where your guide will greet you and give you a thermal suit and winter boots. Your guide will then explain the plan of action for the night and show you on a map where you can expect the hunt to go. From here, your driver will welcome you onboard the minibus.

As we drive, your guide will be constantly reading the sky and checking the movement of local weather systems.

If luck is on our side, and a good opening in the clouds is found, your guide and driver will set up a camp. Sit around a cozy campfire, enjoy hot drinks and a hot meal. When the activity is at its peak, you can pose for photos taken by your guide, which will be sent to you after the trip. Learn from your guide how to set up your own camera to capture the action – we will provide you with a tripod. Our guides are available if you have any questions whilst on the trip.

After a long night of hunting, your driver will drop you off at your accommodation (for guests staying on Tromsø island itself) and you can catch up on some well-earned rest.

We hope you would like to join us! And maybe try our dog sledding tour as well?
