There is a reason why dog sledding becomes a highlight of so many Arctic journeys.
It begins with excitement and anticipation. Guides prepare the dogs, check the harnesses and make sure every guest feels ready. As the teams move into the starting area, the energy is impossible to ignore. Your heart beats a little faster. The dogs are eager to run.
Then everything changes.
The sled starts moving and the noise disappears. Suddenly, there is only the sound of runners gliding across the snow and the steady rhythm of the dogs working together along the trail.
As you travel through the Arctic landscape, you become part of the team. You learn to work with the dogs, follow the trail and experience the winter wilderness from a completely different perspective. You may feel a little nervous. You will need to hold on, help your team and trust the guide ahead.
And then you smile.

Back at the kennel, the pace slows down again. Around the fire, with warm drinks, stories from the trail and time spent with the dogs, many guests begin to understand why dog sledding has been part of Arctic life for generations.

It starts with dogs. It becomes something more.
For many guests, dog sledding is unlike anything they have done before.
A little excitement. A few butterflies in your stomach. Maybe even some nerves. Before heading out on the trail, we provide warm clothing, equipment, instructions and the guidance you need to feel comfortable and prepared.
Guests travel in pairs, sharing a sled and learning together along the way. At first, everything feels new. The dogs. The sled. The commands. The energy.
Then, little by little, the pieces come together.
You begin to find the rhythm of the trail, understand the dogs and learn your role within the team. There are moments when you need to help uphill, brake on descents and work together to keep the team moving smoothly through the landscape.
Dog sledding is an active experience, but that is also what makes it so rewarding.
By the end of the day, many guests leave with a sense of accomplishment, a deeper respect for the dogs and a better understanding of what dog sledding is really about.

What to Expect
Meeting point and departure from Tromsø
Meet our driver and black mini-bus at our meeting point; outside of Scandic Ishavs hotel in Tromsø. Boarding starts 10 minutes before departure. As we leave the city behind, the Arctic landscape gradually opens up around us and for 35 minutes we will head towards our husky kennel at Kvaløya.
Arrival at the kennel
Upon arrival, you will be welcomed by our guides and, of course, the dogs. Before the tour begins, we provide thermal suits, winter boots and everything you need to stay warm and comfortable. Our guides will give you a briefing and introduction to how to do dog sledding.
Self-Drive Dog Sledding
After a safety briefing and introduction to dog sledding, guests are paired up and assigned their own sled team. Follow your guide through snowy landscapes and Arctic wilderness. Working together with your dogs and travel partner, you will experience dog sledding the way it has been done for generations.
Time Around the Fire in Lavvo
Back at the kennel, the pace slows down. Come into our lavvo and enjoy fire, warm drinks, stories from guides and after that - you are welcome to cuddle the dogs before saying goodbye.
Return to Tromsø
Relax on the journey back to Tromsø, bringing with you memories, photographs and a deeper understanding of Arctic dog sledding culture.

The people behind Arctic Adventure Tours
For more than 25 years, Arctic Adventure Tours has been built around the same idea: great dog sledding starts with healthy dogs, experienced people and guests who feel genuinely welcome.
Our kennel on Kvaløya is home to around 130 Alaskan Huskies and has been cared for by Per-Thore, Hege and their team since 1999. Many of the dogs are born here, grow up here and spend their lives as part of the kennel family.
We keep our groups small, take time with our guest and focus on creating authentic experiences that feel personal rather than rushed.
For us, dog sledding is not simply an activity. It is a way of life built on responsibility, respect and a deep connection to the dogs we work with every day - all year around.

Our Dogs - the heart and core in what we do
Our dogs are born to run, but their lives are about much more than pulling a sled.
Throughout the year, every dog follows a carefully planned cycle of activity, training, rest and recovery. From the winter season and longer wilderness expeditions to summer holidays, free running and gradual preparation for the next season, their wellbeing always comes first.
With around 130 dogs, no two are exactly alike. Each has its own personality, strengths and needs. Some thrive as leaders. Others are happiest further back in the team. Getting to know every dog is a lifelong process and one of the most rewarding parts of our work.
Many of our dogs are born here and grow up surrounded by people and other dogs. From their first steps as puppies to their first time in harness, they gradually become part of the team.
The same care continues throughout their lives. As dogs grow older, their workload is adjusted and they slowly transition into retirement before finding carefully selected homes that match their personality and needs.
For more than 25 years, Per-Thore, Hege, our kennel team and our veterinarian have worked closely together to care for the dogs. It is a responsibility we take seriously, but above all, it is a relationship built on trust, respect and genuine affection.
