Marvel at the beauty of the Arctic night sky!

Campfire with aurora

Aurora over the fjord

Full winter clothing is provided

Imagine warming your hands around a campfire, listening to the crackle of the flames and the wind across glistening snow.

You look up into the starry night sky, and see a streak of white. The streak changes to green, purple and red. You watch it begin to move, flicker and even dance in front of your very eyes.

These are the Northern Lights, and this is the magical experience that we hope to show you.

The Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis, is the reason many of our guests come to Northern Norway. Our proximity to the magnetic North Pole and milder climate here in Tromsø makes it the perfect location to see this phenomenon. Join us in our state of the art Mercedes minibus, as we search the night sky to find the Aurora.

Northern Lights Chase

Your adventure begins at the Arctic Adventure Centre where your guide will greet you and give you a thermal suit and winter boots. Your guide will then explain the plan of action for the night and show you on a map where you can expect the hunt to go. From here, your driver will welcome you onboard the minibus.

As we drive, your guide will be constantly reading the sky and checking the movement of local weather systems. You can learn more about the science behind the Aurora during a short film (available in several languages) which is shown as we leave the light pollution of the city behind and enter the pitch black of the Arctic wilderness.

Aurora

If luck is on our side, and a good opening in the clouds is found, your guide and driver will set up a camp.

Sit around a cosy campfire, enjoy hot drinks and a locally prepared stew. When the activity is at its peak, you can pose for photos taken by your guide, which will be sent to you after the trip. Learn from your guide how to set up your own camera to capture the action – we will provide you with a tripod.

Our guides are available if you have any questions whilst on the trip. As the campfire dies out grill hotdogs and marshmallows in the embers before jumping back on the bus to start the journey home.

After a long night of hunting, your driver will drop you off at your accommodation (for guests staying on Tromsø island itself) and you can catch up on some well earned rest.

If conditions are stable, you may sit back and enjoy the show for several hours. If not, the hunt will continue! No-one can predict exactly what the Aurora will reveal, so stay patient, stay alert and hopefully you will be rewarded!
